him and had him for
supper, Berniece played on
the piano for me and then
she and I walked to Dundee
together an I took the train
with Francis. got to town
and met Mother & sis and we
ate again then went to the
depot and talked until train
time when I got on the train
and went to sleep.

Mon - Feb. 11, 18
got to camp at 5:15 this
morning, happy but sleepy
started a letter to Berniece
after breakfast and finished
it on the installment plan.
Special detail all this week
at Q.M. Dept. sleep in the
office most of the morning
do some hauling part of the P.M.

Tue - Feb. 12, 18
Special detail, nothing
to do all morning, drill
with Gas masks all
afternoon. I was acting
as an instructor. Have
some hauling to do this
evening eat supper
read awhile & go to bed.
early.
Wed - Feb. 13, '18
Go to the gas chambers (1)
this morning and take
gas in every form known
I believe. write a letter to
Berniece (2)
wash clothes
and go to Dupont and try
to get B._ a Valentine present
couldn't get one so got one
at the canteen, read awhile
and go to bed.

Notes:

1: Gas Chambers were not used for executions until 1924. At the time Percy wrote the diary, the concept of 'Gas Chamber' was only of a training tool for a nasty weapon of war.

2: This letter goes into great detail about the gas chamber training, among other things.
